The modern Ekiden is a type of popular long distance relay race held all over Japan. Origins of the sport date back to when a messenger would deliver a messenger to messenger until it reaches its final destination.
The sport emphasizes individual perseverance as well as unity of group.
Although there are now other methods to deliver a message, the tradition of Ekiden remains through the sport. Honolulu Ekiden and Music would like to “pass-on” this tradition in hopes to strengthen ties by sharing part of Japan’s culture.
This is the first Ekiden of its kind outside of Japan.
